W231 – Professional Writing
ABSTRACT:
Indiana University students and faculty continue to face problems with the Oncourse Web site. The site is down for long periods of time, unreliable and confusing. We surveyed forty students and a few faculty members to obtain their feedback on the site.
We found that the ease of use of Oncourse was above average with roughly 68% of surveyors responding favorably that Oncourse was easy to use. Only four students ranked the site below the median score of 5 in this category. Students were frustrated that teachers were not required to use the site and the overall slow speed of the site. In addition, students were having difficulty locating class materials on the site.
Possible solutions include revamping the Oncourse site, implementing a mandatory usage policy for faculty, going completely paperless and overall site renovation. Going paperless and implementing a policy are both free and beneficial to both students and faculty. Renovating the entire site involves the most man hours and money due to Web design fees.
After reviewing our proposed solutions on cost, manpower and timeframe we decided that a mandatory usage policy and a slight revamp of the Oncourse site is the most feasible solution. The cost will be roughly $30,000 due to the hiring of a Web designer contractor.
The following steps are necessary in order to achieve our goal:
• Implement a new flawless system
• Go completely paperless
• Force a mandatory usage policy for teachers
